Warning for dog and puppy owners - Are your pet's vaccinations up to date?

Along with reports from veterinarians across Victoria, the Australian Veterinarian Association has released a notice on the increase in canine parvovirus cases being seen by practices and are warning all pet owners to make sure your dogs are up to date with vaccinations. This disease is highly contagious and tends to favour hot and humid conditions although can be found in the canine community throughout the year. Dogs that are particularly susceptible to parvovirus are young puppies and dogs that have not had their vaccination boosters.

Winter Weight Worries

We are getting to that time of the year where it is colder outside and weight seems to be an issue. Whether it is because we are walking less due to the cold or extra treats just seem to be irresitable when we are curled up inside by the fire, weight gain and winter seem to go hand in hand. What can we do to make sure our furry friend doesn't get tubby in these cooler months?

Chronic Renal Care seminar

On Wednesday 21st April, we held a free Chronic Renal Care seminar for our clients with cats who suffer from chronic renal disease. Chronic renal disease is kidney failure and it occurs in 53% of cats over 7 years old.

Top breeds identified for teeth and gum problems

Toy Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Maltese, Pomeranians and Shetland Sheepdogs are amongst the top canine breeds predisposed to periodontal disease according to Banfield's Applied Research and Knowledge (BARK) team located in the US.

Puppy Pre-School on Tuesday nights

The early days in a dog's life are so important to their temperament. By proper socialisation at an early age you can make sure your new little family member is equipped to cope with life out in the world. It can be hard to know what the right environment to socialize your puppy is. It is also important to protect your puppy from disease until he is fully vaccinated. We recommend using a delta accredited 'Puppy Pre-School' program. We are pleased to be able to offer this service to our clients held on Tuesday nights at our clinic.

Petpep at Carlton Gardens Primary School

On Thursday 18th March, Nurse Stacey and Nurse Emma were invited to visit the Carlton Gardens Primary School. Altogether 100 students were taught about responsible pet ownership. They also enjoyed learning what a Vet and a Vet nurse does.

Carlton welcomes Dr Sondhya Basak

Meet Dr Sondhya who joined the Carlton Veterinary Surgery team in January this year. Sondhya moved to Melbourne from her home town of Whitley Bay, a small coastal town in north east England, in 2004. She enjoys working in both the medical and surgical parts of her job, and hopes to expand her knowledge in smaller exotic pets.

February's Barks in the Park cancelled

Unfortunately due to poor weather our last 'Barks in the Parks' which was scheduled on Thursday 11th February, was cancelled. We look forward to seeing everyone at our next 'Barks in the Parks' later in the year, when there will hopefully be more pleasant weather!

A 'wet' Barks in the Park

Carlton Vet Clinic held a 'Barks in the Park'last month just prior to Christmas. It was a great chance for the team to catch up with our furry friends outside of the clinic and for all the pet owners to meet new friends.
